Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape is a beautiful and welcoming place, but whenever you're out exploring the natural world it is important to be aware of the risks and keep yourself and others safe.
Some of the key risks in this area include:
Fast Moving Tides and Quicksand
The tides in Morecambe Bay are notoriously fast, and channels can backfill several hours before high tide, cutting people off on the sands. We recommend that you stay close to the shore and do not walk out over the sands unless you are taking part in a managed Cross Bay Walk.
Check the tide times before you go out to explore the shore, and watch out for quicksand.
Ticks and Lyme Disease
There are several species of deer living in the National Landscape, meaning there are also deer ticks. We help monitor Lyme disease prevalence in local tick populations and it is present in the National Landscape. The help prevent ticks you can wear long sleeved clothing, tuck in cuffs and always do a 'tick check' after exploring in nature. Check pets too and remove and dispose of ticks as soon as you find them.
Slips, Trip and Falls
The National Landscape has some wonderful geological features - however this does mean lots of limestone, which can be very slippy when wet. Watch your footing, wear sturdy shoes and make sure you have plans in the event of slips, trips and falls.
