Bittern Countryside CIC

The National Landscape Partnership works very closely with the Bittern Countryside Community Interest Company which was formed to carry out activities which benefit the community, and conserve and enhance the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape.

Company shareholders and volunteers are dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of the National Landscape; want to get the local community involved; want to help our villages to thrive; and are happy to help either by buying shares or by volunteering time and energy.

BCCIC Publications: Natural History Atlases

Working with Arnside & District Natural History Society, the Bittern Countryside CIC has published a series of atlases on the flora and fauna of the National Landscape. Packed with useful information and brilliant colour photographs, these handy little booklets will help you identify different species and will point you to where you are most likely to find them in the National Landscape.

The booklets are free to download or are available to buy from the National Landscape office. You can order hard copies or download pdf copies from the Bittern Countryside Community Interest Company website.

BCCIC Publications: Energy fact sheets

There are six leaflets in the series, full of useful information and advice. These can be downloaded from the Bittern Countryside Community Interest Company website, and we also have hard copies of some of the leaflets available in the National Landscape Office.

Bittern Sustainable Schools Programme

The Bittern Sustainable Schools Programme was launched in 2023, and seeks to work with schools within the National Landscape to help them engage young people with the landscape and take steps to protect nature. So far this programme has funded:

  • Workshops for all 6 primary schools in 2023 on the theme of 'Marvellous Moths', learning about moths and creating artwork to raise awareness of the threats to them. This culminated in a display at Leighton Moss as part of the Silverdale & Arnside Art & Craft Trail.
  • Installation of solar panels at Arnside Primary School
  • The purchase of a potting shed for Arnside Primary School
  • The installation of a new pond dipping platform and pond management works at Archbishop Hutton School in Warton
  • The laying of a hedge at Archbishop Hutton in Warton
  • The installation of a new small pond at Storth School
  • A contribution providing match funding for the replacement of lighting with energy efficient lighting throughout Beetham School
  • The replacement of outdoor lighting to dark skies friendly lighting at The Yealands School
  • A series of forest school workshops at Silverdale School
  • The donation of a set of local wildlife atlases to all 6 primary schools in the National Landscape
