The Tree Nursery was set up in 2020 as to grow and supply local provenance trees for projects in the National Landscape. Volunteers converted a small patch of waste land into a thriving hub for community involvement. Children from Arnside Primary School helped collect acorns, growing them on at home and returning them to be nurtured in the tree nursery, before being planted out in the landscape.
As the site developed, raised beds were constructed from donated pallets, waterbutts connected to a donated shed to collect rainwater, compost bays made for making compost for repotting of trees.
Other species grow in the nursery include wych elm, rowan, hawthorn and crab apple.
Hundreds of volunteer hours have been put into collecting seed, propagating trees, potting them on, weeding, mulching, watering and planting them out. Trees are donated to local small scale projects for free or a small donation.
Trees have been planted out at Beetham School, Coldwell Top Bank and as standard in hedgerow restoration and creation.
The nursery continues to operate with a few sessions each year.
Feel free to pop along and enjoy the tranquil space cared for by many.
