Bittern Sustainable Schools

Bittern Sustainable Schools is a joint programme, delivered with the Bittern Countryside CIC.

Since launching the project in 2022, we have been able to support our local schools with the following projects:

  • Solar panel installation on the roof of Arnside National School
  • A potting shed for Arnside National School
  • Forest School sessions and training for Silverdale School
  • Dark Sky Friendly lighting upgrades for Yealand School
  • Energy Efficient Lighting upgrades for Beetham School
  • Two new ponds for Storth School
  • Gardening equipment and a garden tool storage shed for Storth School
  • Pond improvements including decking at Archbishop Hutton School
  • Hedgelaying at Archbishop Hutton School

Marvellous Moths

As part of the programme, we also commissioned Larksfoot CIC to deliver a series of workshops for all the primary schools in the National Landscape - these workshops included setting a live moth trap and learning about moths, learning about the threats faced by moths (particularly climate change and light pollution) and creating campaigning artwork. The artwork was then displayed at the Silverdale & Arnside Arts and Craft Trail (2023) and the Silverdale & Arnside Art Fair (2025). In 2025 this project, along with our other work with the BCCIC was generously funded through the Westmorland & Furness Council Climate and Nature Fund.

We're still working on project with Bittern Sustainable Schools, including some Fabulous Fungi workshops, and further sustainability projects in-school. If you're keen to join in and help support these activities you can get in touch with the National Landscape team or the Bittern Countryside CIC - volunteers are always welcome!
